Overview
The organization is seeking an Appeals Attorney (Hearing Legal Services Officer II) to serve veterans, their dependents, and family members by ensuring they receive the benefits, support, quality care, and recognition earned through their service. This role involves advocating for and assisting veterans and their dependents in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of lawful and ethical veterans claims for benefits. The attorney will also educate veterans and dependents on available services and benefits offered by state and federal programs and conduct outreach to promote these programs.
Responsibilities
- Advocate for veterans and their dependents in claims for benefits
- Assist in the preparation, presentation, and prosecution of veterans claims
- Educate veterans and dependents on state and federal benefits and services
- Conduct outreach to promote veterans services and programs
Requirements
- Must possess REAL ID as required for USDVA Accreditation
- Considerable knowledge of laws and regulations related to veterans’ benefits
- Ability to interpret and apply veterans’ benefits laws and regulations
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Excellent research, legal analysis, and writing skills
- Strong customer service and public speaking abilities
- Experience with military and/or military veteran communities
- Graduation from an accredited college or university and an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensure before the highest court of any state or federal bar
- Eligibility for licensure to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims
- Must reside within the State of Virginia
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in veterans' law strongly preferred
Additional Information
- A new probationary period is required for all new Benefits employees who have not completed and currently maintain USDVA Accreditation, regardless of prior state probationary periods.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hiring range up to $96,000
- Pay Band: 5
