Overview
An established AI contracting platform is seeking an experienced Commercial Counsel to lead its commercial legal team. This role involves managing complex enterprise B2B transactions, driving operational excellence through legal technology, and mentoring a high-performing legal team. The position offers the opportunity to influence product development and legal processes at a leading legal technology company.
Responsibilities
- Lead negotiation and closure of the company’s most complex, high-value enterprise B2B agreements in partnership with Sales, Partnership, and Procurement teams.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on AI-related contracting terms, including data protection, privacy, and security.
- Collaborate with Legal Operations to design and implement scalable commercial legal processes, automating workflows and setting standards for legal team operations.
- Develop policies, playbooks, and templates to standardize contracting and establish clear expectations with business partners.
- Partner with Sales and Finance leadership on forecasting, legal capacity planning, and training Sales teams on contracting protocols.
- Represent the organization as a thought leader and legal technology evangelist at industry events.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a world-class commercial legal team, fostering a culture of high performance and professional development.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
- Minimum 12 years of legal experience managing sophisticated commercial transactions, ideally combining top-tier law firm and high-growth SaaS in-house experience.
- Prior management experience leading legal teams.
- Strong negotiation skills with executive presence and the ability to influence internal executives and external C-suite stakeholders.
- Ability to balance legal risk management with commercial speed and agility.
- Deep understanding and intellectual curiosity about AI, data protection, and privacy, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear contract language.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional strategic initiatives and improve legal processes through technology.
- Comfortable serving as a public-facing legal technology advocate.
- Ability to manage high-volume workloads calmly under pressure.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $230,000 to $300,000, dependent on experience, proficiency, and location.

Location
This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco, requiring in-office attendance at least twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) with additional days for team or company events as needed.
