Overview
This role involves serving as Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment, supporting the People Team on a wide range of employment-related legal matters. The position includes overseeing labor and employment litigation, managing outside counsel, and supporting strategic relationships with labor and employment suppliers and vendors. The role reports to the General Counsel and requires working from the Denver headquarters at least two days per week.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice on employment law issues such as workplace investigations, terminations, discrimination, harassment, accommodations, compensation, benefits, and recruiting.
- Collaborate with People Team and business leaders to design compliant and scalable employment practices.
- Manage employment litigation, mediations, EEOC matters, and arbitration, including cases involving harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and wage and hour issues.
- Draft and advise on human resources policies and their implementation.
- Stay current on employment law and compliance topics to mitigate risks effectively.
- Guide the entire employment lifecycle including hiring, onboarding, performance management, investigations of employee misconduct or policy violations, and terminations.
- Prepare employment-related documents and contracts.
- Recommend, implement, and improve employment law training programs.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with labor and employment-related suppliers and vendors.
- Assist in selecting and managing external legal counsel to ensure quality service and cost control.
- Support organizational initiatives such as compensation programs, restructurings, and cross-functional investigations.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and membership in good standing with at least one state bar.
- Minimum of 5 years of labor and employment counseling and litigation experience, either in a law firm or significant in-house counsel role.
- Experience with labor and employment healthcare regulations is strongly preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to identify risks and simplify complex legal issues clearly.
- Strong critical thinking, business acumen, and sound business judgment.
- Proven ability to partner with and influence business decisions, providing strategic recommendations based on data and analysis.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.
- Leadership skills with a collaborative approach, responsiveness to urgent matters, and proactive execution.
- High ethical standards, integrity, and respect for privacy and confidentiality.
- Ability to travel and be on-site as needed to meet business requirements.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $173,000 to $231,000, with a target annual bonus of 30%.
- Final compensation will be based on location, experience, and qualifications.
