Overview

This role is for a highly experienced energy attorney specializing in gas transactions. The position involves independent work with major matter, team, or client responsibilities, including mentoring other attorneys on specific projects. The attorney will frequently supervise professional teams handling significant legal matters related to energy commodity transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and implement complex energy commodity transactions.
  • Provide technical and expert legal services primarily related to gas and other energy transactions.
  • Draft and negotiate various agreements related to gas and energy transactions, including enabling agreements such as NAESB, EEI, and ISDA.
  • Plan, conduct, and supervise large and complex energy commodity transactions with minimal supervision, assessing legal and business risks and advising clients accordingly.
  • Provide legal counsel to all levels of management, including senior management.
  • Provide leadership and direction to less experienced attorneys and support staff.
  • Prepare and revise budgets and early matter assessments for all matters involving outside counsel.
  • Perform other projects and duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Minimum of 10-12 years of professional experience in a specialized legal area.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legal principles, practices, and procedures applicable to complex assignments.
  • Excellent legal research and analytical skills.
  • Ongoing knowledge of federal and/or state law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience handling energy commodity transactional work, including gas and gas-related transactions (e.g., biogas, RINs, LNG).
  • Experience collaborating with business teams to structure complex energy commodity transactions.
  • Familiarity with physical and financial energy trading documentation such as ISDA, NAESB, and EEI agreements.
  • Experience with firm and interruptible transportation and storage agreements, asset management agreements, non-disclosure agreements, secured transaction documentation, and credit support instruments.
  • Experience with contract documentation for various emissions products.

  • Expected salary range: $219,600 to $244,000, depending on experience.
