Overview

A growing law firm specializing in special education matters is seeking an Associate Attorney to join their practice. The firm focuses on representing families to secure appropriate educational services and outcomes for students with disabilities. The work is fast-paced, client-facing, and litigation-driven.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of special education matters from intake through resolution
  • Advise and represent parents of children with disabilities in impartial hearing administrative proceedings and appeals to the New York State Education Department Office of State Review
  • Conduct client intakes and initial consultations, including assessing the merits of potential claims
  • Draft pleadings, due process complaints, witness affidavits, examination outlines, opening statements, and closing briefs
  • Represent clients at impartial hearings by examining witnesses and presenting evidence
  • Negotiate settlements and draft stipulations of settlement
  • Conduct legal research and prepare written advocacy at all stages of a matter
  • Participate in IEP meetings and related school-based proceedings as appropriate
  • Supervise and collaborate with paralegals and support staff on assigned matters, including guiding document collection and case preparation, and reviewing and delegating pre- and post-hearing tasks
  • Coordinate with relevant Department of Education offices to ensure implementation of interim orders, hearing decisions, and settlements
  • Maintain accurate and timely case notes, time records, and client communications in case management systems
  • Contribute ideas for process improvements, efficiencies, and best practices within the practice

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar or eligibility for prompt admission
  • Litigation experience managing matters through all stages of the litigation process
  • Strong interest in special education law and advocacy for students with disabilities
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
  • Comfort working directly with clients and handling sensitive, high-stakes matters

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in special education and/or disability law
  • Experience handling impartial hearings and administrative proceedings
  • Experience working with diverse client populations
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in New York City (not required)

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Hybrid (New York City) or fully remote work arrangements available
  • Professional, client-facing role with occasional evening or weekend work as required by case needs
  • High degree of autonomy with close collaboration with firm leadership
  • Emphasis on quality advocacy, responsiveness, and follow-through

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $110,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications

  • Position may be based in New York City (hybrid) or fully remote, at the candidate's preference
