Overview
An established auto insurance provider is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New York courts, focusing on first party insurance defense. This role involves working with staff counsel covering venues within Manhattan, Staten Island, and Bronx, NY. The position is remote.
Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
- Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
- Defend assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing as applicable
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree (required)
- Admission to the New York Bar (required)
- Licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and able to meet ongoing licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE)
- 2 to 6+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
- Ability to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
- Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
- Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and demonstrate strong organizational, priority-setting, and multitasking skills
- Capacity to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in civil litigation
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience
- Professional communication skills in person, via telephone, and written correspondence/email
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $118,900.00 - $186,550.00
- Final salary offer depends on role scope, candidate experience, education, training, work location, and market considerations
