Overview
This role involves defending lawsuits filed in Virginia courts and providing first-party insurance defense. The position is with the organization’s Staff Counsel team located in Fairfax, VA, and is listed as Remote.
Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
- Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including:
- Deposition/examination before trial
- Examinations under oath
- Defend matters assigned by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
Qualifications (Required)
- 2–6+ years of related field litigation experience in insurance/defense and/or personal injury litigation
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree
- Admission to the Virginia Bar
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in Virginia and meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
- Ability to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
- Ability to document files clearly, concisely, and professionally so they can be understood by customers, clients, coworkers, and other organization employees
- Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and demonstrate strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
- Ability to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience
- Ability to communicate professionally in person, via telephone, and in written correspondence
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $118,900.00 - $186,550.00
- The annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are considered to determine the final offer, including scope and responsibilities, experience, education and training, work location, and market/business considerations.
