Overview
The organization is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New York courts and handle first party insurance defense matters. This position is with Staff Counsel covering venues within Syracuse, NY.
Responsibilities
- Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
- Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department.
- Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including:
- Depositions/examinations before trial
- Examinations under oath
- Defense by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable
Qualifications
- 2 to 6+ years of experience in related litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury.
- Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED.
- Admission to the New York Bar REQUIRED.
- Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable.
- Must be able to travel as required, including attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
- Must be able to document files clearly, concisely, and professionally in writing for customers, clients, coworkers, and other organizational employees.
- Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, and demonstrate strong organization, priority setting, and multi-tasking skills.
- Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation experience.
- Insurance defense-related litigation experience.
- Ability to communicate professionally in person, via telephone, and in written correspondence.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual Salary: $112,750.00 - $175,275.00
- The annual salary range is a general guideline; factors include scope and responsibilities, experience, education and training, work location, and market/business considerations.

- Remote (commutable distance to Middletown, NY location)
- Coverage venues: Syracuse, NY
