Overview

This role involves providing legal advice and support to an employee benefits business group within a large insurance brokerage firm. The position includes reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a variety of contracts and handling licensing and legal matters related to employee benefits and related business operations.

Responsibilities

  • Review, draft, and negotiate various agreements including master services agreements, vendor agreements, independent contractor agreements, data privacy agreements, confidentiality agreements, referral agreements, business associate agreements, and other commercial transactional contracts.
  • Provide practical, business-focused legal advice on issues and risks to stakeholders and leadership.
  • Collaborate with business units to understand commercial requirements in contracts and legal projects.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal clients and stakeholders.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams such as IT, risk management, accounting, sales, operations, marketing, and human resources on contract review, legal compliance, and company policies.
  • Advise corporate departments and business groups on privacy and security laws, regulations, and industry standards, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
  • Review, update, and maintain internal legal policies, processes, playbooks, checklists, self-service tools, trainings, and templates.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with company policies and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Membership in good standing of at least one State Bar or the District of Columbia State Bar.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related legal work experience.
  • Experience reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts, preferably including complex commercial agreements, data privacy agreements, go-to-market agreements, or enterprise technology agreements.
  • Knowledge of privacy and data protection laws and regulations, including U.S. state and federal consumer protection and privacy laws, GDPR, and other privacy laws.
  • Experience providing creative, business-friendly solutions during complex negotiations.
  • Experience in a specialist legal area such as healthcare, SEC regulatory, insurance, or data privacy is preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish professional relationships with internal clients, management, and legal colleagues.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and prioritization skills, including multitasking on multiple high-priority projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn contract management software.
