Overview

An established auto insurance provider is seeking an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New York courts, focusing on first party insurance defense. This role is part of the Staff Counsel team covering venues within Syracuse, NY.

Responsibilities

  • Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Provide opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath
  • Defend assigned matters by trial or dispositive hearing as applicable

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree (required)
  • Admission to and good standing with the New York Bar (required)
  • 2 to 6+ years of litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
  • Ability to travel as needed for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
  • Strong written communication skills to document files clearly and professionally
  • Ability to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple priorities
  • Capacity to learn and apply extensive technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in civil litigation
  • Insurance defense-related litigation experience
  • Professional communication skills in person, by telephone, and in written correspondence/email

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $104,550.00 - $162,975.00
  • Final salary offer depends on role scope, candidate experience, education, location, and market considerations
  • No sponsorship for employment authorization is available for this position

  • Remote position with a requirement to be within commutable distance to Syracuse, NY
