Overview

This role provides legal counsel and services, in consultation with and under the direction of the General Counsel, and in coordination with other members of the Legal Department. The Associate General Counsel supports the organization and broader partnership in carrying out its mission in compliance with applicable laws and at an acceptable level of legal risk.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel and legal services, coordinated with the Legal Department and under the direction of the General Counsel
  • Support the organization and broader partnership to operate in compliance with applicable laws
  • Manage and advise on legal risk to support mission delivery
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and engage effectively with outside counsel

Requirements

  • US Juris Doctorate, or foreign equivalent
  • At least 5 years’ experience as a practicing attorney
    • At least some experience in a major global law firm is highly desired
    • Cross-border, multijurisdictional matters experience is highly desired
  • Solid foundation in fundamental legal theories
  • Ability to identify legal problems and issues and provide practical advice to in-house clients
  • Strong negotiating and research skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience dealing with outside counsel, with preferably global exposure and general knowledge of international affairs
  • Sensitivity in and exposure to cross-cultural situations
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Fluency in a second language (especially Spanish, French, or Portuguese) would be highly advantageous

Preferred Qualifications

  • Admittance to the California Bar is preferred
    • The California requirement may be waived for an exceptional candidate admitted to the bar in another jurisdiction
  • Experience with countries in the developing world would be highly advantageous
  • Experience in both law firms and corporate in-house legal departments would be preferred
  • Experience in a non-US legal system, particularly the Civil Law system would be preferred
  • Experience with nonprofit organisations would be highly advantageous
