Overview
This role involves serving as Associate General Counsel, Regulatory Affairs and Disputes, providing expert legal counsel to support the efficient operation of a marketplace business focused on secondary transactions in venture-backed, pre-IPO companies. The position reports to the General Counsel and is suited for an experienced lawyer with an entrepreneurial mindset who thrives in a fast-paced startup environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee all aspects of litigation, arbitration, collections, and dispute resolution, including commercial, regulatory, and employment matters.
- Develop and execute internal litigation management processes and systems, including eDiscovery and records management/retention, in collaboration with Legal Operations.
- Provide day-to-day legal advice on employment and intellectual property matters.
- Collaborate with and manage outside counsel to control costs and ensure quality legal representation.
- Draft, review, and supervise litigation-related documents and legal memoranda.
- Advise senior leadership on litigation exposure, trends, and mitigation strategies.
- Support regulatory inquiries, examinations, and investigations.
- Partner closely with Compliance on regulatory matters.
- Build positive and collaborative relationships across the organization.
Requirements
- J.D. or L.L.B. with a license to practice law in the United States or Canada.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant legal experience, ideally starting at a law firm and progressing in-house at a financial services company.
- Proven experience managing litigation and regulatory matters.
- Substantial experience developing and executing internal litigation management processes and systems.
- Experience advising fintech companies or financial institutions.
- Strong interest in creative legal problem-solving, including researching novel and ambiguous areas of law.
- Ability to provide pragmatic advice to fast-moving product, business, and operations teams.
- Demonstrated sound judgment and composure in high-pressure situations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with securities law.
- Experience advising on employment and intellectual property matters.
- Background in tech startups, high-growth companies, private equity, or venture capital funds.
