Overview
A global legal team is seeking an Associate Legal Counsel based in Tokyo, Japan. This role involves providing legal support and advice across various business functions including business development, public policy, marketing, and communications. The position requires collaboration with regional and global legal colleagues and other teams within the organization.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted legal partner to fast-paced, high-performing teams.
- Provide clear, practical legal advice on regulatory matters, consumer protection, competition, marketing, employment, privacy, dispute resolution, and law enforcement.
- Make sensible legal risk assessments balancing business priorities and risk mitigation.
- Collaborate closely with legal team members regionally and globally.
- Support business functions with legal guidance to enable growth while managing risk.
Requirements
- Qualification as a bengoshi (licensed attorney) in Japan is mandatory.
- Native-level proficiency in Japanese (written and spoken).
- Business-level proficiency in English (written and spoken); high standardized test scores (TOEIC/TOEFL) are a plus.
- Minimum 2-5 years of post-qualification experience.
- Experience in-house at a multinational corporation or startup, or secondment from a law firm, is advantageous.
- Ability to deliver creative, thoughtful, and business-oriented legal solutions.
- Tech-forward mindset with willingness to leverage AI tools to enhance legal productivity.
- Strong communication, listening skills, and a collaborative team player.
- Proactive, able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
