Overview

This role is primarily remote in the state of Washington, with required in-person appearances as needed.

The organization is seeking an Associate Attorney to represent the company and its policyholders in routine civil litigation and workers’ compensation matters involving moderately complex legal issues and claims for monetary damages or compensation related to personal injury or property damage. Under moderate supervision, manage cases from inception through resolution, applying legal knowledge, research skills, and client relationship capabilities in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

  • Litigation execution: Manage all phases of litigation, including discovery, hearings, trials, mediations, and drafting legal documents such as pleadings and motions.
  • Trial support: Support Senior Trial Counsel and Senior Litigation Counsel through trial preparation, management, and assistance at every stage of the litigation process.
  • Client advisory & relationship management: Provide clear, reasoned legal opinions and strategic advice to Claims Representatives and insured clients; communicate transparently and effectively to maintain strong client relationships.
  • Technology utilization: Use e-discovery and case management technologies to streamline legal processes, improve efficiency, and reduce operational costs; coordinate effectively with remote team members.
  • Risk evaluation & resolution facilitation: Identify and evaluate legal risks and collaborate on strategies to mitigate risk with clients and senior counsel to facilitate effective resolutions.
  • Documentation accuracy & compliance: Ensure legal documents, pleadings, and motions are prepared accurately and comply with applicable standards and client expectations.
  • Timely client communication: Provide clear, consistent, and timely updates and recommendations to insured clients and claims professionals.
  • Organizational improvement: Participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and best practices within Staff Legal and Global Legal & Compliance organizations.
  • Ethical compliance: Uphold legal ethics and compliance requirements, follow legal regulations and licensing requirements, and promote integrity within the legal team.

Requirements

  • Education: Juris Doctor (JD) or LLB from an accredited law school.
  • Licensure: Admission to the bar in Washington and in good standing; special licenses to practice before particular boards or federal courts may be required.
  • Knowledge: General knowledge of insurance law, and as necessary, workers’ compensation.
  • Technology & analysis: Proficient in e-discovery, case management systems, and basic legal analysis tools.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, research, and legal writing skills.
  • Negotiation basics: Basic knowledge of negotiation techniques, including preparation, active listening, and problem-solving.
  • Case management: Demonstrated ability to manage cases from start to finish under supervision.
  • Communication: Effective communication and persuasion skills, both written and oral.
  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate with clients, claims professionals, and senior attorneys.
  • Organization: Organized, process-oriented, with strong time management skills.

  • Pay philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by factors including skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects the competitive labor market value for these positions across the national market and provides opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
  • Some roles may have a corresponding compensation plan that includes commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
