Overview

This role supports the organization’s Claims Staff Legal team as an Associate/Staff Attorney working remotely in partnership with Senior Attorneys. The position provides support for the organization’s largest and most complex general liability files. Work includes partnering with Complex Litigation Attorney Staff on motions, briefs, depositions, and onsite appearances throughout Illinois.

Primary case focus will be within the northeast region of Illinois.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze legal and factual issues; conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research; develop and present defense strategies on behalf of clients
  • Prepare pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions, and briefs in support of defense strategies with supervision
  • Provide effective and timely communication, information, legal advice, and other services to clients on legal and factual issues
  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures
  • Ensure prompt, efficient, and effective disposition of assigned tasks
  • Independently prepare and present witness evidence at: trials, judicial/administrative hearings, arbitrations, and alternative dispute resolutions
  • Attend CLE seminars as needed

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year of legal experience is preferred; recent graduates who have recently passed the Illinois State Bar Exam will also be considered
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school and license to practice in the state of Illinois
  • Functional understanding of claims and litigation is preferred
  • Commitment to providing a high level of customer service
  • Positive minded and collaborative team-player attitude
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills
  • Strong MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)
  • Effective communicator with strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to think strategically and desire to be challenged

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the tripartite relationship is a plus

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annualized base pay range: $84,800 - $127,200
  • Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency, and demonstration of competencies required for the role.
  • Base pay is one component of total compensation. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.

Location

  • Remote work in partnership with Senior Attorneys, with travel within the assigned jurisdiction for required court appearances and ad hoc in-office yearly meetings.
  • Onsite appearances and legal support coverage throughout Illinois; specific focus on cases within the northeast region of the state.
