Overview

This full-time role is for an experienced California-licensed Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith Litigation Attorney on an ongoing engagement basis with potential to extend or expand over time.

The position is fully remote and is open to candidates anywhere in the U.S. The firm represents policyholders exclusively in bad faith and coverage litigation, including matters involving long-term care, long-term disability, life, health, and homeowners’ policies, as well as ERISA benefit claims.

Responsibilities

  • Litigate bad faith and coverage disputes involving long-term care, disability, life, health, and related first-party policies in California state and federal court.
  • Analyze policy language, coverage positions, and claim files to build and pursue theories of recovery against carriers.
  • Draft complaints, demand and challenge letters, coverage analyses, discovery, and dispositive motions.
  • Take and defend depositions, argue motions, and prepare matters for mediation, arbitration, and trial.
  • Work directly with clients dealing with serious illness, disability, or the loss of a family member, communicating with care and clarity.
  • Collaborate with partners on case strategy while maintaining meaningful independent responsibility for assigned matters.
  • Manage a docket and maintain strong responsiveness in a fully remote environment.

    • coverage analysis
    • claims handling standards
    • the statutory and common law framework governing bad faith in California
  • Experience is welcome from either side of “v.” Specifically:
    • attorneys who litigated bad faith, fraud, and coverage matters for carriers, or
    • attorneys who advised insurers on coverage opinions
  • Not an insurance defense role; the firm represents insureds exclusively.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and motion practice skills, with the ability to take direction and also run independently.
  • Comfortable working closely with clients in sensitive, high-stakes personal circumstances.
  • Reasonably available during West Coast business hours and effective in a fully remote setting.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Outstanding references.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in long-term care, disability, life, or health insurance litigation (significant plus, not required).

  • Pay for contract engagements is based on multiple factors, including work experience, qualifications, credentials, location, market supply/demand, and the candidate’s preference. (Each candidate’s pay rate affects the client bill rate and influences competitiveness for the position.)
  • Benefits: In addition to salary, employees are W2 and eligible for full benefits when working in roles for 20 hours per week, including a Qualified 401k plan.
  • Benefits-eligible employees receive complimentary Group Life, LTD and AD&D and professional liability insurance.
