Overview
The organization is seeking an Internal Claims Counsel to join the claims team. This role involves applying legal expertise to support insurance coverage and claims decisions across multiple states and litigation matters. The position reports to a Managing Attorney who reports to the Chief Claims Officer.
This is a “work where it works best” role supporting location flexibility across the US, with headquarters in Columbus.
Responsibilities
- Apply experienced insight to private passenger automobiles, contract interpretation, multi-state tort law, civil procedure, and litigation matters.
- Research, draft, and communicate insurance coverage opinions.
- Interface with claims management, corporate legal, and regulatory professionals on claims-related matters.
- Support claims management through research and analysis of multi-state tort and insurance coverage laws to establish operational policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Present in-person training sessions to adjuster teams and/or management on a variety of legal topics.
- Draft form letters and releases.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor with an active license to practice law.
- 5+ years of relevant experience.
- First-chair (jury trial) insurance defense litigation experience.
- Technical understanding of property/casualty insurance principles.
- Strong written and oral communication.
- Intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills.
- Comfort with risk analysis, flexibility, and concise decision-making.
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships in a fast-moving environment focused on getting things done.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $140,000 - $155,000 (STI & LTI Eligible)
