Overview
This role involves leading and advancing the commercial legal function within a high-growth fintech organization focused on expanding access to retirement benefits for employees of small and medium-sized businesses. The position requires a strong commercial attorney to manage a broad range of contracts and provide practical legal guidance to support business growth and innovation.
Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end commercial contracting process, including structuring, drafting, negotiating, and advising on customer contracts, partnerships (including white-label), vendor and SaaS agreements, and NDAs.
- Serve as a trusted legal advisor to business teams, providing clear, actionable guidance to facilitate deal completion.
- Identify when deals raise complex legal issues beyond commercial scope (e.g., ERISA, fiduciary, investment adviser, privacy, securities, employment, consumer marketing, product) and coordinate with subject matter experts while maintaining ownership.
- Develop and execute strategies to scale the legal function, including leading contract lifecycle management (CLM) implementation, integrating AI and other tools, and creating templates, playbooks, and self-service resources.
- Collaborate with Product Counsel to support new and expanding products by advising on commercial terms and drafting foundational documentation such as terms of use.
- Take on additional corporate, governance, and other legal projects as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum 7 years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience at a fast-paced, high-growth company.
- Strong background in commercial contracting, with experience drafting and negotiating a wide range of B2B and SaaS agreements.
- Proven ability to advise non-legal business teams in real time and translate legal issues into practical business guidance.
- Deep expertise in contracting related to intellectual property, technology licensing, SaaS terms, and data rights.
- Licensed to practice law and in good standing, or otherwise authorized to practice (e.g., registered in-house counsel) in any U.S. state.
- Proficiency and comfort using AI tools in legal work, including review, drafting, and redlining.
- Excellent communication skills, able to clearly explain complex legal issues to diverse audiences.
- Detail-oriented, diligent, adaptable, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house legal experience in fintech or other highly regulated industries.
- Experience at a large, sophisticated startup or technology company with strong legal practices.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $190,000 - $215,000 annually, determined by geographic location within the U.S., relevant skills, and experience.
- Additional compensation components may include bonuses, commissions, and equity.
