Overview

A growing AI-focused company is seeking a Commercial Counsel to serve as its first in-house attorney. This role involves owning the contract function, supporting privacy compliance infrastructure, and acting as a trusted legal partner to product and go-to-market teams. It offers high impact and autonomy, ideal for a lawyer interested in building a legal function from the ground up within a company on a trajectory toward category leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all commercial agreements including SaaS Master Service Agreements (MSAs), Data Processing Agreements (DPAs), Business Associate Agreements (BAAs), vendor contracts, and Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)
  • Develop and maintain the legal operations infrastructure such as templates, playbooks, approval workflows, and self-serve tools
  • Lead privacy and data compliance efforts covering GDPR, CCPA, financial services data requirements, and AI governance
  • Provide product counsel on AI-related legal issues, acceptable use policies, and regulatory positioning
  • Acquire and maintain deep knowledge of the regulatory environment relevant to customers including financial advisors, broker-dealers, insurance professionals, and banking institutions
  • Support the company’s position as a trusted, category-leading product in financial services AI

Requirements

  • 4-5 years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience at a SaaS or technology company
  • Strong expertise in commercial contracts such as SaaS MSAs, DPAs, and BAAs, preferably with financial services counterparties
  • Working knowledge of GDPR and CCPA, with experience negotiating DPAs with enterprise customers
  • Comfortable advising on product legal questions, especially in AI, data privacy, or fintech contexts
  • Ability to operate independently as the sole in-house attorney with significant autonomy
  • Startup-stage legal experience with an understanding of balancing speed and risk
  • Direct, kind, and professional communication style

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in a major law firm focusing on tech transactions, data privacy, or financial services regulatory matters
  • Experience at a well-run enterprise SaaS company with exposure to a strong commercial legal function
  • Interest in and eagerness to develop expertise in financial services regulatory environments

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary range: $160,000 - $190,000
