Overview
This position represents clients in all areas of insurance defense practice, handling cases that are primarily high complexity and exposure and/or involve unique insurance defense issues. The role manages all phases of cases from intake to resolution and assumes first and/or second chair responsibility for reassigned cases that are in the late stages of litigation.
Responsibilities
- Litigate cases of high complexity and exposure, which may involve unique legal or procedural issues in all venues, through full resolution via trial and/or settlement.
- Prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and briefs.
- Serve as lead attorney at hearings, conferences, interviews, mediations, arbitrations, and/or trials.
- Develop and utilize strategies and arguments to thoroughly prepare for trial.
- Use knowledge of legal precedents to analyze probable case outcomes.
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of approaches to a case.
- Perform or ensure completion of other tasks necessary for proper client representation.
- Assume first or second chair responsibility for cases in late stages of litigation, including trials, when necessary.
- Handle matters within their State of licensure and courts of admittance; may require seeking admission and handling matters in other jurisdictions.
- Lead knowledge sharing of industry legal trends and developments.
- Provide job-related guidance, mentoring, and training to other attorneys.
- Consult with Claims Executive team and provide legal strategy recommendations regarding the legal aspects of personal injury claims.
- Provide guidance to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Interpret applicable industry laws, rulings, and regulations.
- Functionally supervise attorneys assisting with case development opportunities.
- Provide guidance and mentorship with autonomy to learn.
Physical Actions & Work Environment
- Work may be performed in-person at a company office or virtually at an approved alternative work location, and may include field locations.
- Indoor environment: climate-controlled with adequate lighting and ventilation; background noise and interruptions may occur.
- Field work outdoors may include exposure to weather elements.
- Frequently sits or stands for prolonged periods (up to a full shift).
- Occasionally moves about the workplace, including navigating stairs, ramps, and level or uneven surfaces.
- Occasionally moves, pushes, pulls, lifts, carries, and places objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Frequently uses shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers to manipulate equipment, tools, and objects.
- Frequently performs fine motor tasks such as typing, mouse use, or writing (up to a full shift).
- Occasionally performs bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, and reaching overhead or below the knees.
- Requires clear vision (with or without correction) for visually reading and verifying information, including depth perception and peripheral vision.
- Requires adequate hearing (with or without correction) to communicate, respond to auditory signals/alarms, and discern sounds essential for safety and productivity.
- May require regular travel between offices, alternative work locations, and/or field locations.
- High Exposure Attorneys are expected to handle matters assigned within their State of licensure and Courts of Admittance, which may require travel by vehicle, train, or air, including extended overnight and/or lengthier travel periods.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Licensed to practice law in applicable states required upon hire.
Experience Requirements
- Experience handling matters that are high complexity and/or exposure, including first chair jury trial experience, and/or comparable court experience required.
- Multistate jurisdictional practice strongly preferred.
