Overview

The organization is seeking an experienced California-licensed Insurance Coverage and Bad Faith Litigation Attorney for a full-time, fully remote engagement. This role is open to candidates anywhere in the U.S. and is expected to run on an ongoing basis, with the potential to extend or expand over time.

This policyholder-side position focuses on bad faith and coverage litigation involving long-term care, long-term disability, life, health, and homeowner’s policies, as well as ERISA benefit claims. Attorneys collaborate on strategy while taking meaningful independent responsibility for assigned matters.

Responsibilities

  • Litigate bad faith and coverage disputes involving long-term care, disability, life, health, and related first-party policies in California state and federal court.
  • Analyze policy language, coverage positions, and claim files to build and pursue theories of recovery against carriers.
  • Draft complaints, demand and challenge letters, coverage analyses, discovery, and dispositive motions.
  • Take and defend depositions, argue motions, and prepare matters for mediation, arbitration, and trial.
  • Work directly with clients who may be navigating serious illness, disability, or the loss of a family member, with sensitivity and clarity.
  • Collaborate with partners on case strategy while managing meaningful independent responsibility for your own matters.
  • Manage a docket and maintain strong responsiveness in a fully remote environment.

Requirements

  • California-licensed attorney with 3–5+ years of insurance coverage and/or bad faith litigation experience.
  • Substantive command of insurance law, including:
    • policy interpretation
    • coverage analysis
    • claims handling standards
    • the statutory and common law framework governing bad faith in California
  • Experience from either side of the “v.” is welcome, including:
    • litigating bad faith, fraud, and coverage matters for carriers; or
    • advising insurers on coverage opinions.
  • The role is policyholder-side; it is not an insurance defense position.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and motion practice skills; able to take direction and also run independently with assignments.
  • Comfortable working closely with clients in sensitive, high-stakes personal circumstances.
  • Reasonably available during West Coast business hours and effective in a fully remote setting.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Outstanding references.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Long-term care, disability, life, or health insurance litigation experience is a significant plus.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay (full-time annualized): $130,000–$200,000.
  • Contract engagement pay is based on multiple factors, including work experience, qualifications, credentials, location, market supply/demand, and the candidate’s preference. Pay may affect the client bill rate.

  • In addition to salary, eligibility for full benefits is available when working 20 hours per week, including a Qualified 401k plan.
  • Benefits-eligible employees receive complimentary Group Life, LTD and AD&D, and professional liability insurance.
  • CLE and Professional Expense stipend for attorneys.
