Overview

A Colorado-based nonprofit legal organization is seeking a contract attorney to provide short-term affirmative litigation support for homeowners. This role focuses on protecting low- and moderate-income homeowners and mobile homeowners from abusive lending practices, foreclosure, and other housing-related legal issues through strategic litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide affirmative litigation on behalf of low- and moderate-income homeowners and mobile homeowners, addressing issues such as abusive lending, mortgage servicing errors, defective mobile home sales, exploitative mobile home park practices, fair housing violations, title disputes, and HOA conflicts.
  • Litigate cases in state and/or federal court using consumer protection laws, real property law, fair housing laws, Colorado’s Mobile Home Park Act, and other relevant statutes.
  • Serve as lead or supporting counsel through all litigation stages, including motion practice, discovery, depositions, trial, mediation, and settlement negotiations.
  • Coordinate with paralegal staff and other organizational teams to ensure timely case tracking and reporting.
  • Attend hearings, court appearances, and conferences as required.
  • Prepare necessary documentation for case management and reporting.
  • Perform additional legal work related to contract deliverables with autonomy.

Requirements

  • Admission or eligibility for admission to the US District Court for the District of Colorado.
  • Admission or eligibility for admission to the Colorado State Bar (current admission preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years litigation experience in a nonprofit, government enforcement agency, legal services provider, or private law firm.
  • Experience preferred in mortgage servicing, predatory lending, consumer protection, fair lending, bankruptcy, civil rights, housing justice, or related litigation.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, interpersonal communication, and legal writing skills.
  • Client-focused, creative mindset with a strong commitment to social and racial justice.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-changing environment.
  • Ability to travel within Colorado as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with class actions or multi-plaintiff litigation.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, CLIO, Google Suite, and e-discovery tools.
  • Additional language skills are a strong plus.

Compensation & Contract Details

  • Contract duration: June 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026 (four months).
  • Budgeted compensation: $37,000 for the contract period.
  • Occasional in-person work required for meetings, witness interviews, and court appearances.
