Overview

A growing early-stage energy infrastructure company focused on battery energy storage and microgrid projects in New York State and the Northeast is seeking a part-time Corporate Counsel. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with the business on contracts, commercial decisions, and regulatory matters in a dynamic, small-team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Take over and improve contract review, drafting, and negotiation, including commercial, real estate, procurement, vendor, service provider, equipment supply, and development agreements
  • Understand and advise on legal risks and commercial tradeoffs appropriate to the company's stage and economics
  • Enhance and streamline form documents and contract templates
  • Utilize AI and legal technology tools for contract review, drafting, research, and workflow improvements
  • Manage outside counsel efficiently to ensure high-quality legal outcomes
  • Support business objectives related to energy regulation, utility programs, tariff and revenue program analysis, compliance, permitting, development processes, and risk allocation
  • Collaborate with the team to prioritize legal work within a part-time schedule

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active bar admission in good standing in New York, or in another U.S. jurisdiction with eligibility and willingness to register as in-house counsel in New York and meet any other required authorizations
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, including significant experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements directly with counterparties
  • In-house legal experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience in energy, infrastructure, real estate, construction, project finance, regulated industries, or startups is beneficial but not required
  • Strong commercial judgment, self-directed work style, and ability to identify risks and propose practical legal solutions
  • Willingness to experiment with modern legal technology and AI tools while applying independent legal judgment and maintaining confidentiality
  • Interest in a durable, long-term part-time role with deep business engagement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practical commercial generalist mindset capable of balancing detailed legal analysis with sensible, timely answers
  • Comfortable handling both senior-level strategic work and hands-on legal tasks
  • Ability to contribute to business areas adjacent to legal scope where appropriate

Compensation and Employment Terms

  • Part-time salaried position with an annualized salary range of approximately $85,000 to $130,000, based on agreed weekly hours and experience
  • Expected commitment of 15-20 hours per week, with schedule to be agreed upon
  • Employment as a W-2 part-time salaried employee
  • Disclosure of any outside employment or consulting work required to avoid conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality
  • Statutory benefits such as paid sick leave and applicable state paid-leave programs provided based on work location
  • No company-sponsored health insurance expected due to part-time status; additional benefits or paid time off dependent on final schedule and offer terms

Schedule

  • Flexible schedule with a regular weekly cadence
  • Availability spread across most weekdays, with the ability to adjust timing and hours by mutual agreement
  • Role requires consistent engagement to respond to ongoing legal and business needs

Location

  • Remote eligible position
  • Company headquarters located in lower Manhattan, New York City
  • Work primarily focused on New York State and the Northeast
  • Occasional in-person meetings possible but not required
