Overview
A legal counsel role is available to support the development and compliance of supplemental health insurance products within a group employee benefits division. This position is part of a four-attorney team providing strategic legal guidance for protection solutions and savings & investments businesses focused on supplemental health insurance.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support for the development, maintenance, and offering of supplemental health insurance products and services.
- Prepare, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements including marketing, distribution, administration, TPA, and vendor agreements, subject to senior review.
- Advise on legal risks and potential impacts of business decisions, including escalated claims and consumer complaints.
- Monitor, review, and interpret changes in laws, rules, and regulations related to insurance.
- Review laws and regulations affecting employer groups, associations, labor unions, and other non-employer groups to ensure compliance with state law before policy issuance.
- Educate business partners on legal impacts, collaborating cross-functionally with compliance, product, and operations teams to ensure regulatory compliance while minimizing client impact.
- Draft regulatory responses, disclosures, and correspondence related to market conduct issues for senior review.
- Collaborate with internal compliance teams to develop and implement policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks.
- Analyze complex legal issues requiring evaluation of multiple factors.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active membership in the Bar of any U.S. jurisdiction in good standing.
- Minimum of two years' experience with insurance regulatory issues, particularly supplemental health insurance, life insurance, and state insurance matters.
- Strong written and oral communication skills tailored to the audience.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Adaptability and agility in providing legal advice.
- Comfortable working in a rapidly changing corporate environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Effective organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Detail-oriented, action-oriented, and able to prioritize workload accurately.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with voluntary benefits insurance products, including supplemental health and/or long-term care.
- Knowledge of ACA, HIPAA, and ERISA laws.
- Experience with life insurance products.
- Innovative thinking to develop creative, cost-effective, and practical business solutions.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $140,000 - $150,000 annually. Actual starting pay depends on qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote), and operational needs.
- Eligibility for an annual bonus based on company bonus plan and individual performance, at the employer's discretion.
Location & Working Conditions
- Hybrid work environment with locations in Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Philadelphia, and Denver.
- Occasional travel to meet with leaders, team members, and business partners.
