Overview

A legal team within a Fortune 100 insurance and financial services organization is seeking a Counsel to provide dedicated legal support across a portfolio of complex specialty insurance lines. This fully remote role involves drafting, reviewing, and negotiating policy forms and endorsements for management liability and specialty coverages, including Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Fiduciary, Crime, Cyber/Tech, Professional Liability, Financial Institutions, Surety, Trade Credit/Credit & Political Risk. The Counsel will advise underwriters, product managers, and business partners on coverage interpretation, surplus lines and admitted product matters, regulatory compliance, and product development. Collaboration with the Reinsurance and Alternative Risk Transfer group is also part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and expertise on a broad range of matters within specialty insurance lines with minimal direction.
  • Attend business partner meetings to understand business processes and needs.
  • Identify and assess risks in unique or complex business situations and develop risk management and mitigation recommendations.
  • Address high exposure or risk situations, considering business risk tolerance in risk management strategies.
  • Develop creative, practical, and effective legal solutions to issues without established precedent.
  • Lead complex and/or strategic legal matters, advising senior leaders on case law, legislative, and regulatory issues.
  • Communicate legal requirements and cautionary counsel clearly to clients and business partners.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships across legal and business teams, including leadership levels.
  • Work independently and potentially lead teams on projects or assignments.
  • Mentor less experienced attorneys or paralegals on business and legal issues.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
  • Full licensure as an attorney in good standing and compliance with continuing legal education requirements in the practicing state(s).
  • Typically six or more years of relevant legal experience, preferably with substantive experience in management liability or specialty insurance coverage law.
  • Demonstrated business knowledge and ability to serve as a trusted legal advisor to sophisticated business partners.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skilled at interpreting statutes, regulations, insurance policies, and contracts.
  • Ability to prioritize, coordinate complex projects or cases crossing functional or business lines.
  • Experience leading complex or strategic negotiations.
  • Supervisory skills are helpful as the role may include supervising up to three legal associates.

  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively across multiple lines of business.

Compensation & Benefits

  • National salary range: $138,000 to $243,000 annually.
  • Expected starting salary range: $138,000 to $206,000 annually.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage.
  • Paid time off starting at a minimum of 18 days per full calendar year, pro-rated quarterly based on hire date.
  • Nine paid holidays, 8 hours of Lifetime paid time off, and 8 hours of Unity Day paid time off.
  • 401(k) plan with company match and company-paid pension plan.
  • Business casual attire.

Location

  • This position is fully remote.
