Overview
This opportunity is for Counsel (G13) and Assistant General Counsel (G14) roles within a legal team supporting enterprise-wide privacy and compliance initiatives for a major health plan. The roles focus on advising on HIPAA and healthcare privacy laws, negotiating and drafting Business Associate Agreements and other contracts involving protected health information (PHI), and collaborating with business and technology teams to manage privacy risk.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal support and guidance on HIPAA, data privacy, and healthcare regulatory matters.
- Draft and negotiate contracts involving PHI.
- Advise business partners, exercising independent judgment on routine matters (Counsel role).
- Serve as a subject-matter expert on HIPAA and healthcare privacy (Assistant General Counsel role).
- Lead complex privacy and data-sharing initiatives and manage higher-risk matters with greater autonomy (Assistant General Counsel role).
- Provide strategic legal guidance to senior business and technology stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external clients.
- Assist and support senior attorneys with management of legal matters and projects.
- Prepare clear and concise legal analyses and memoranda.
Requirements
Education and Licensure
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution.
- Must be a member of the Tennessee bar or licensed in another state with the ability to become a Tennessee bar member as required.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in private practice or an in-house legal department.
Skills
- Strong analytical, planning, organizational, and research skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to interpret and translate complex legal concepts into actionable guidance for business personnel.
- Ability to work independently on multiple tasks with critical deadlines and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house experience at a health plan, healthcare provider, healthcare vendor, or law firm.
- Experience supporting technology, data, analytics, or digital health initiatives.
- Familiarity with state privacy laws affecting healthcare data.
- Experience supporting incident response, regulatory inquiries, or internal investigations related to privacy or data security.
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certification(s).
Compensation & Benefits
- Exact title, leveling, and offer details will be determined after the interview based on experience and demonstrated ability.
Location
- These are office-based roles requiring on-site work at the corporate office located in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- Relocation to Chattanooga is required if not currently residing in the area.
