Overview

This role supports the Government, Policy, and Regulatory Affairs Team in the Asia-Pacific and Japan (APJ) region to manage increasing regulatory work and support business objectives. The position involves helping the organization understand and fulfill telecommunications regulatory compliance obligations across various APJ countries. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of the regulatory landscape, practical experience implementing compliance in complex technological environments, and the ability to work cross-functionally.

Responsibilities

  • Lead regulatory advisory workstreams, providing strategic guidance on how evolving laws impact products, services, marketing, and customer communications.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Commercial, and Go-To-Market teams to assess risk, develop compliant approaches, and enable confident product launches.
  • Manage proactive regulatory projects by identifying upcoming reforms, planning for changes, and preparing the business with clear, actionable plans.
  • Support additional practice areas as needed, including cybersecurity and privacy workstreams, and assist with drafting and reviewing a broad range of regional priorities.
  • Deliver concise, practical legal advice tailored for non-legal stakeholders, focusing on actionable next steps.
  • Instruct and manage external counsel when necessary, including scoping work, managing timelines, and supporting budget discipline.
  • Contribute to improving legal function scalability through templates, self-serve guidance, administration, process improvements, and legal operations.
  • Build strong internal relationships and act as a trusted business partner to influence and align stakeholders on pragmatic legal outcomes.
  • Monitor regulatory developments proactively and maintain accurate updates in internal systems.

Requirements

  • JD, LL.B., or equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 to 8 years of post-qualification experience (PQE).
  • Experience working in law, policy, or regulatory roles in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, or another relevant APJ jurisdiction.
  • Understanding of telecommunications and technology regulatory frameworks in the APJ region, or experience in other highly regulated industries such as financial services or energy.
  • Experience advising on regulatory compliance matters in a law firm, in-house, or government agency setting.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work independently and drive initiatives autonomously.
  • Strong critical thinking, good judgment, and ability to balance priorities and resources across concurrent projects.
  • Ownership of workstreams with clear task management, deadline tracking, and execution in collaboration with teams.
  • Strong organizational skills coordinating across internal functions to ensure timely delivery.
  • Familiarity with drafting regulatory filings and legislative consultation submissions.
  • Experience managing responses to regulatory communications, enforcement actions, and other inquiries.

Location

This is a remote role based preferably in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, or Brisbane, Australia.

Travel

Occasional travel may be required to attend project or team in-person meetings.
