Overview

A growing legal team is seeking a Director, Legal - Data and Content to lead the data and content legal function. This role is remote within the United States, with a strong preference for candidates located on the East Coast. The position involves managing a small team and serving as the strategic legal lead for complex commercial data and content contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and negotiate sell-side research licensing agreements, exchange and financial data/content agreements, distribution and aggregation agreements, and vendor contracts related to global acquisition and licensing of content.
  • Provide expert legal advice to internal stakeholders, including senior executives, on content and data rights, regulatory compliance, privacy, and commercial disputes.
  • Partner with Content, Sales, Marketing, and Product teams to build a scalable legal framework supporting high-growth objectives.
  • Conduct research and develop proposals and project plans for procurement and distribution of data and content.
  • Stay informed on evolving global laws, regulations, and industry guidance affecting data and content.
  • Create and enhance legal playbooks and policies to scale the legal function.
  • Manage and develop a small legal team to increase departmental output.
  • Support the broader legal team on corporate and general legal matters as needed.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to, and good standing with, a state bar.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements related to licensing of content/data, including sell-side investment research and market data.
  • Experience in-house at a broker-dealer, investment bank, or financial data provider is required.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property, financial data/research, compliance, financial regulation, securities, privacy, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Proficiency in negotiating commercial contracts such as Master Services Agreements, Services Agreements, Statements of Work, Service Level Agreements, Data Licensing Agreements, Content Distribution Agreements, Order Forms, and NDAs.
  • Strong business acumen with a pragmatic, client-service oriented approach balancing legal risk.
  • Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to maintain firm and patient positions.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with diverse internal and external professionals.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $220,000 to $240,000 USD.
  • Eligibility for performance-based bonus and equity.
