Overview
A nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing community safety and racial justice is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Director of Legal Training and Curriculum for a newly established Family Court Practice Institute. This public/private partnership, funded by the New York State Unified Court System, aims to promote high-quality legal representation in New York State Family Court through training and support of attorneys representing children, parents, agencies, and related professionals.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop training curricula and supporting practice guides for family court attorneys and practitioners across New York State.
- Create resource materials including slide decks, tip sheets, checklists, toolkits, and practice guides.
- Serve as faculty for CLE-approved trainings as needed.
- Ensure compliance with New York State CLE Board requirements for training offerings.
- Recruit, consult, and coordinate with subject matter experts, trainers, external partners, and team members to develop training and publish practitioner resources.
- Manage and supervise staff and oversee logistics related to training events and activities.
- Identify family court practice needs and jurisdictional differences throughout New York State.
- Collaborate with the Family Court Practice Institute’s Youth Council and lived experience group on curriculum design and content.
- Address identified training gaps by developing tailored training and practice supports.
- Support other Practice Institute initiatives, including contributing to a comprehensive website with practice resources, caselaw updates, and a Learning Management System (LMS).
Requirements
- Admission to practice law in New York State (required) and in good standing.
- Substantial practice and training experience in New York State Family Court.
- Commitment to advancing justice for children and families through practitioner training and support.
- Strong leadership and management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary setting and maintain relationships with partners statewide and nationally.
- Willingness to travel for training, collaboration, and conferences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with federal and New York State law relevant to family court.
- Knowledge of professional ethics, lawyering skills, public and social policy.
- Experience with trauma-informed practice in family court.
- Experience working with subject matter and training experts.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $110,000 – $145,000, commensurate with experience.
