Overview
This role is for an Employment Counsel who will anchor employment and compliance work while flexing across the broader legal remit as business needs evolve. The position is designed for an attorney with 5 years of overall legal experience, including at least 2 years of meaningful employment law experience, who wants to build broad in-house judgment rather than remain narrowly specialized.
The legal team supports commercial, privacy, product, corporate, employment, IP, and legal operations. Work involves using AI thoughtfully to accelerate research, drafting, analysis, and knowledge management, with verification and independent legal judgment expected of every attorney.
Responsibilities
- Own day-to-day employment law matters, including:
- Workplace policies
- Performance management
- Investigations
- Leave and accommodation questions
- Wage-and-hour issues
- Employee relations
- Separations across jurisdictions, including coordination with local counsel when appropriate
- Draft, review, and negotiate employment documents, including:
- Offer letters
- Separation and settlement agreements
- Employment-related memos
- Local-counsel engagement agreements
- Responses to employment-related subpoenas and personnel file requests
- Build and maintain compliance infrastructure, including practical processes for:
- Regulatory monitoring
- Training
- Policy review
- Audits
- Investigations
- Compliance reporting
- Support corporate governance, including:
- Subsidiary maintenance
- Director and officer matters
- Board and committee materials
- Corporate records and other governance work
- Flex across the broader legal remit by taking on matters in areas such as:
- Commercial
- Privacy
- Product
- IP
- Litigation
- Other legal department priorities as workload and needs evolve
- Use AI-assisted research and established escalation practices to ramp up responsibly
- Use AI as a core tool (not an experiment), including:
- Legal research, drafting, issue spotting, analysis, and knowledge management
- Validation of outputs
- Protection of confidential information
- Refinement of AI-enabled legal workflows
- Exercise sound judgment and escalate when appropriate, including:
- When a specialist colleague, a second legal review, or outside counsel is required
- Clear issue framing so the right person can act efficiently
- Partner directly with the business (e.g., People, Finance, Sales, Product, Security, and other stakeholders) to translate legal risk into practical, actionable recommendations
- Build for scale by creating reusable playbooks, templates, guidance, and processes that improve consistency, speed, and ownership
Requirements
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- 4-5 years of relevant legal experience (in-house, in private practice, or a combination)
- At least 2 years of meaningful employment law experience, including experience advising on:
- Employee relations
- Workplace policies
- Investigations
- Accommodations or leave
- Performance management
- Separations
- Experience supporting employment compliance, policies, training, investigations, audits, or related operational processes
- Demonstrated comfort working outside a narrow specialty and developing practical working knowledge of unfamiliar issues
- Hands-on experience using AI tools for legal research, drafting, or analysis, with a clear approach to:
- Verification
- Confidentiality
- Responsible reliance on AI-assisted output
- Ability to explain a real workflow you have used or built
- Clarity on where human judgment is non-negotiable
- Experience supporting a global workforce or coordinating multi-jurisdictional employment matters, including work involving the UK or India
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including translating legal risk into clear, actionable business advice
- Sound judgment regarding risk, ownership, and escalation
- Builder’s mindset with strong follow-through, and comfort progressing as priorities and assignments evolve
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior in-house experience, particularly at a high-growth, PE-backed, VC-backed, or B2B SaaS company
- Experience with, or interest in learning, routine corporate governance or subsidiary management
- Familiarity with privacy, data protection, AI governance, or technology-related compliance
- Experience developing playbooks, knowledge systems, technology-enabled workflows, or other scalable legal processes
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $127,697.25 - $187,289.30
- The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including work location and experience.
- This base salary is one component of total compensation. Other compensation may include a bonus program or commission plan, and stock options if approved by the organization’s board.
