Overview

A technology-driven asset management firm specializing in applying advanced machine learning techniques to finance is seeking an Employment Counsel. This role involves providing expert legal advice on employment-related matters, ensuring compliance with labor laws, and supporting a dynamic workforce.

Responsibilities

Legal Counsel

  • Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of employment law including hiring, performance management, disciplinary actions, terminations, and employee relations.
  • Advise on compliance with federal, state, local, and international employment laws and regulations, coordinating with outside counsel as needed.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple legal matters, including urgent contractual negotiations.

Contracts and Agreements

  • Draft, review, and negotiate employment contracts, severance agreements, non-compete agreements, vendor agreements, and other HR-related documents.
  • Ensure employment agreements comply with company policies and legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Maintain the company’s employment agreement template library for recruiting use.
  • Provide legal counsel on new employment policies and assist in drafting and revising employee handbooks.
  • Support select non-employment legal matters such as NDAs and commercial contracts in collaboration with internal stakeholders.

Risk Management

  • Identify potential legal risks related to employment practices and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor changes in employment law and update company practices accordingly.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with Recruiting, HR, management, and other departments to address employment law issues and support business objectives.
  • Provide guidance on employee benefits, compensation, and other HR matters.
  • Liaise with recruiting during offer processes and candidate negotiations.

Policy Development and Implementation

  • Develop, review, and update company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with employment laws and best practices.
  • Implement policies related to equal employment opportunity, harassment prevention, and workplace safety.

Dispute Resolution

  • Manage and resolve employment-related disputes, including internal investigations and performance improvement plans.
  • Represent the company in employment-related claims if necessary.

Training and Education

  • Conduct training sessions for managers and employees on employment law, company policies, and best practices.
  • Develop educational materials to promote legal compliance and a positive work environment.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Attorney in good standing with the applicable state Bar.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in employment law, preferably within financial services or technology sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state employment laws, particularly California and New York; international experience in the UK is a plus.
  • Proven experience handling employment litigation and dispute resolution.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • High ethical standards and professional integrity.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $150,000 - $200,000, determined by factors including education, experience, skills, and location.
  • Additional compensation may include bonuses and other benefits.
  • Benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; life and AD&D insurance; 20 days paid time off; 9 sick days; and a 401(k) plan with company match.

Location

This position is based at the organization's modern office location. Remote work may be involved but employees may be required to visit the office periodically.
