Overview

A statewide nonprofit law firm in Georgia is seeking a Staff Attorney to join its Farmworkers Rights Division. This division provides free legal representation to farmworkers in Georgia facing employment-related issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal services to farmworkers with employment-related concerns such as unpaid wages, discrimination based on sex, race, or national origin, human trafficking conditions, and breaches of recruitment contracts.
  • Represent primarily guest workers from Mexico and Central America, as well as U.S. migrant farmworkers.
  • Engage in cases that address widespread exploitation and abuse of guest farmworkers in Georgia.

The organization is a statewide, nonprofit public interest law firm offering free civil legal services to low-income individuals across Georgia. It operates 10 regional offices serving 154 of the state's 159 counties outside metro Atlanta. The team includes approximately 182 full-time staff members.

Legal aid is provided across a broad range of civil issues including family law, housing, access to public benefits, eviction prevention, farmworkers' rights, and educational access.

Context

In Fall 2021, a major federal labor trafficking sting operation exposed widespread exploitation of guest farmworkers in Georgia and Florida. This has brought increased attention to the issue from media, policymakers, and the public.
