Overview
A nationally recognized nonprofit organization is seeking a General Counsel to serve as the chief legal advisor. This full-time, remote, direct-hire position offers an opportunity to join senior leadership and work closely with executive management and the Board to guide strategy, mitigate risk, and support long-term growth and sustainability.

Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary legal advisor to executive leadership on complex, high-impact decisions
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal, financial, and operational risks across the organization
- Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements
- Advise on employment and labor matters in partnership with internal HR leadership
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations across a multi-state workforce
- Develop and implement internal policies, procedures, and legal frameworks to support organizational effectiveness
- Support governance efforts, including Board relations, materials, and compliance matters
- Manage outside counsel and external legal vendors for specialized matters
- Partner cross-functionally on strategic initiatives, partnerships, and business development efforts
- Lead or support negotiations for high-impact agreements and organizational initiatives
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission required
- Minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with senior-level or in-house counsel experience strongly preferred
- Experience advising organizations operating at a national or multi-state level; nonprofit, education, or public sector experience preferred
- Strong background in nonprofit compliance, employment law, contract negotiation, and risk management
- Experience managing litigation, regulatory matters, and external counsel relationships
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive base salary ranging from $150,000 to $195,000, depending on experience
