Overview
Position: General Counsel (Significant overlap with EMEA time zones required)
Compensation: Up to USD $220,000 per annum plus up to 10% monthly performance bonus
Total Annual Package: Up to USD $246,800 plus comprehensive benefits
Location: Remote (Global)
This role involves leading the in-house legal function across three distinct areas: a top direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand, a family office investing in hedge funds, and cross-border legal structuring across multiple international jurisdictions. The General Counsel will report directly to the CEO, manage outside counsel relationships, and oversee critical legal domains including FTC compliance, consumer protection, fund subscriptions, custody protocols, and international asset structuring.
Responsibilities
- Own and architect legal infrastructure across three domains: DTC regulatory compliance, fund documentation, and cross-border structuring
- Audit consumer checkout flows against FTC guidelines and other regulatory requirements
- Negotiate hedge fund side letters and review fund documentation
- Coordinate cross-border asset protection and legal structuring
- Deliver monthly legal exposure audits directly to the CEO
- Conduct quarterly compliance sweeps across all consumer-facing operations
- Manage multiple outside counsel relationships simultaneously
- Proactively identify material legal risks without assignment
- Operate with high autonomy and independent judgment across assigned domains
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (US bar holder)
- 5 to 10 years of legal experience, ideally combining law firm and in-house roles
- Proven ability to manage multiple outside counsel relationships
- Experience working across multiple international jurisdictions and coordinating cross-border legal matters
- Demonstrated track record of proactively identifying legal risks
- Comfort operating independently with minimal oversight
- Fluency in AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) for legal research, drafting, and risk identification (to be assessed during interview)
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in corporate or commercial law at a mid-market or BigLaw firm
- Exposure to fund finance, limited partner agreements, or NAV-based lending
- Familiarity with consumer protection law (FTC and state-level statutes) and DTC e-commerce regulatory environment
- Experience supporting corporate transactions or due diligence processes
- Experience working with high-net-worth or family office clients
