Overview
Position: General Counsel (Must have significant overlap with EMEA time zones)
Compensation: Up to USD $220,000 per annum plus up to 10% monthly performance bonus
Total Annual Package: Up to USD $246,800 plus comprehensive benefits
Location: Remote (Global)
This role involves leading the in-house legal function across three distinct areas: a top direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand, a family office investing in hedge funds, and cross-border legal structuring across multiple international jurisdictions. Reporting directly to the CEO, the General Counsel will manage outside counsel relationships and oversee key legal areas including FTC compliance, consumer protection, fund subscriptions, custody protocols, and international asset structuring. This is a senior leadership position with ownership of critical legal domains.
Responsibilities
- Lead legal oversight for three distinct domains: DTC e-commerce regulatory compliance, hedge fund subscription and custody documentation, and multi-jurisdictional legal structuring
- Manage outside counsel relationships across assigned areas
- Conduct monthly legal exposure audits and deliver reports directly to the CEO
- Run quarterly compliance reviews across all consumer-facing operations
- Negotiate limited partner terms and review fund documentation
- Identify material legal risks proactively without assignment
- Develop and maintain legal infrastructure supporting business operations
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Admission to the bar in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- 5 to 10 years of legal experience, ideally combining law firm and in-house roles
- Proven ability to manage multiple outside counsel relationships simultaneously
- Comfortable working autonomously with minimal oversight
- Proficiency in AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) for legal research, drafting, and risk identification; this will be assessed during the interview
- Demonstrated track record of proactively identifying unassigned legal risks
- Experience working across multiple international jurisdictions and coordinating cross-border legal matters
- Strong independent judgment and initiative
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in corporate or commercial law at mid-market or large law firms
- Experience with fund finance, limited partner agreements, or NAV-based lending
- Familiarity with consumer protection laws (FTC and state-level statutes) and DTC e-commerce regulatory environment
- Experience supporting corporate transactions and due diligence
- Exposure to high-net-worth or family office clients
