Overview
A San Francisco-based hormonal health company is seeking an In-House General Counsel to build and lead the legal function for their growing direct-to-consumer health technology business. The organization provides integrative care and hormonal testing to over 300,000 customers and has developed the market’s only FDA-compliant at-home hormone monitor with quantitative testing technology.
Responsibilities
- Lead data privacy and data protection strategy, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, FTC guidance, CCPA/CPRA, state privacy laws, and other applicable consumer data regulations.
- Review and negotiate commercial agreements including vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and SaaS contracts.
- Provide legal guidance on marketing claims, advertising compliance (including FTC regulations), and consumer communications.
- Collaborate with product, marketing, and regulatory teams to ensure claims development and messaging align with regulatory requirements such as FDA, FTC, and other consumer protection and health authorities.
- Support development of privacy policies, terms of service, and customer-facing legal documentation.
- Advise leadership on legal risks related to direct-to-consumer healthcare, consumer health data, digital health platforms, and AI-enabled features.
- Establish scalable legal review processes for marketing, product launches, and partnerships.
- Develop and maintain succession planning strategies aligned with long-term business objectives.
- Support regulatory strategy and risk management for consumer health products.
- Manage outside counsel when specialized expertise is required.
- Build legal infrastructure to support rapid scaling of the startup.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law.
- Minimum of 4 years of legal experience, preferably with exposure to healthtech, digital health, or direct-to-consumer companies.
- Experience with data privacy and consumer data regulations such as HIPAA, CCPA/CPRA.
- Strong experience reviewing and negotiating commercial contracts.
- Experience advising on marketing claims, advertising compliance, or consumer protection law.
- Experience working in a direct-to-consumer business environment is preferred.
- Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced startup environment.
