Overview
This role supports the drafting of insurance forms that enable aggressive state and product expansion. The position is part of the Forms team within Legal & Compliance and reports to the Senior Insurance Counsel.
You will anchor either personal auto or property forms based on your experience, and serve as backup for the other line. Responsibilities include statutory research, original form drafting, first-pass legal review of forms, and legal advisory support for form-related questions.
Responsibilities
- Research state statutes and regulations directly and translate them into compliant, clear policy wording.
- Draft responses to Department of Insurance objections on forms and advocate for the organization’s position on form wording with regulators, including in forms-related audits and market conduct exams.
- Provide legal advice on coverage interpretation and form wording to internal partners (including Claims, Product, and Customer Experience), including form-related legal questions arising during DOI audits and market conduct exams.
- Draft complete new state and product forms packages for your line of business, including base policies, endorsements, state amendatory endorsements, and required notices, ready for filing.
- Perform first-pass legal review of forms drafted within the Forms team and escalate novel state law questions to Senior Insurance Counsel.
- Build and maintain the countrywide base forms and reusable state kit for your line of business:
- Personal auto: UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, and state notices.
- Property: homeowners, manufactured home, condo, and flood, including surplus lines notices where applicable.
- Establish drafting standards and reusable language to make each new state package faster to produce.
- Design and deliver internal training on policy forms, coverage interpretation, and state regulatory expectations.
- Serve as backup drafter for the other line of business.
- Identify legal risks in proposed product designs or coverage changes before they reach the form-drafting stage.
- Review AI-assisted drafts and research for legal accuracy and regulatory compliance; establish guardrails for where AI tools can be relied upon and where human legal judgment is required.
- Maintain and update forms packages in your assigned line of business, revising in response to new statutes, regulations, DOI bulletins, and product enhancements or coverage changes.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
- 5+ years of policy form drafting experience, or a combination of policy form drafting and coverage interpretation (e.g., claims litigation or coverage counsel experience).
- Experience drafting personal lines policy forms for multiple states.
- Experience reading state insurance statutes and regulations directly and converting requirements into policy language.
- Experience drafting responses to regulator objections on form filings.
- Experience advising business stakeholders on coverage interpretation and policy wording.
- Track record of drafting complete forms packages independently—from initial research to filing-ready.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing coverage opinions or interpreting and applying policy language to claims scenarios.
- Experience with either personal auto (UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, state notices) or property (homeowners, condo, manufactured home, flood, or surplus lines notices).
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary and company equity through Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), granted as part of the standard compensation package and based on role and level.
- 401(k) with company match up to 4% of eligible earnings.
- Multiple medical plan options, plus dental and vision coverage.
- Company-funded HSA contributions (based on medical plan selection).
