Overview
This role is part of the organization’s California Workers’ Compensation team. It is a virtual position with openness to candidates located anywhere in California who can make occasional in-person Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB) appearances as required.
This position involves representing clients in workers’ compensation defense practice, primarily handling cases that are low in complexity and exposure, and managing matters from intake through resolution. The role does not require billable hours.
Responsibilities
- Litigate low complexity and low exposure cases and perform duties from intake through trial and/or settlement.
- Prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and briefs.
- Attend hearings, conferences, interviews, mediations, arbitrations, and/or trials.
- Proactively inform leadership of case handling opportunities and challenges.
- Consult with the Claims Department on legal aspects of files.
- Support efficient case management by performing other tasks or duties as needed.
- May serve as second chair in trials for minimal complexity/exposure cases.
- May support senior attorneys in higher complexity/exposure matters and may receive developmental assignments of matters that are moderate in complexity/exposure.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice Law in applicable states required upon hire.
- Bachelors degree preferred.
- Civil litigation and/or personal/bodily injury experience preferred.
- Public speaking ability and the ability to function in adversarial or confrontational situations.
- Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Effective negotiation skills.
- Ability to represent the company with external constituents.
- Demonstrated excellent judgment and decision-making.
- Demonstrated time management and priority setting.
- Strong technical aptitude and proficiency using technology to maximize efficiency in a virtual, paperless environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Civil litigation and/or personal/bodily injury experience.
- Bachelors degree.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and location.
- CA Only: $102,450 - $174,240
- Bonus opportunity (based on company and individual performance) with annual bonus potential up to 15% of the salary.

Work Location & Schedule
- Remote (California)
- Occasional in-person WCAB appearances as required.
- Work may be performed in-person at a company office, virtually at an approved alternative work location, and may include work at field locations.
Physical Actions & Environment
- Work performed indoors in a climate-controlled environment with adequate lighting and ventilation.

- Clear vision (with or without correction) to visually read and verify information.
- Adequate hearing (with or without correction) to communicate and respond promptly to auditory signals or alarms.
