Overview
An Intake Attorney position is available for evaluating potential federal workers’ compensation claims under the Defense Base Act (DBA), the Non-Appropriated Fund Instrumentalities Act (NAFI), and the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (Longshore). This is often the first contact point for prospective clients.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough legal intake interviews with prospective clients by telephone or video.
- Evaluate jurisdiction, employment circumstances, injury history, claim status, timeliness of concerns, prior representation, and potential coverage under the DBA, NAFI, or Longshore Act.
- Review available medical records, claim documents, employment materials, prior settlements, releases, and correspondence when relevant to the intake determination.
- Identify prior settlement language or other facts that may affect whether a new claim can proceed.
- Explain the intake process and general legal framework clearly without creating unrealistic expectations or guaranteeing outcomes.
- Document all material facts accurately and promptly in the firm’s case-management system.
- Prepare concise intake assessments and recommendations for acceptance, decline, or additional investigation.
- Identify urgent deadlines, benefit interruptions, medical treatment issues, or other matters requiring immediate escalation.
- Coordinate conflict checks, engagement documentation, record collection, and transfer of accepted matters to the appropriate legal team.
- Maintain professional follow-up with prospective clients and referral sources.
- Use only firm-approved tools and workflows, with careful human review of all legal analysis and communications.

Required Qualifications
- Active bar admission and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Strong issue-spotting, analytical, interviewing, and client communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate numerous potential matters efficiently without sacrificing accuracy.
- Excellent written documentation and professional telephone/video presence.
- Demonstrated integrity, discretion, reliability, and commitment to confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently and remain responsive in a fully remote environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DBA, NAFI, Longshore Act, workers’ compensation, personal injury, disability, administrative law, or claimant-side practice.
- Prior client intake, case evaluation, or legal screening experience.
- Experience communicating with clients from diverse cultural, geographic, or linguistic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with electronic case management and document review systems.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $150,000–$200,000.
- Full-time, fully remote position.

Location
Attorneys are expected to be available during standard business hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
