Overview
An experienced Interim Healthcare In-House Counsel Attorney is sought for a full-time engagement with a mission-driven healthcare organization. This role involves serving as a key member of the legal and compliance team during a period of transition, providing support across various areas including enterprise risk management, healthcare compliance, research and contracting, employment and benefits, and internal investigations. The position offers potential for conversion to a permanent role.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support across multiple disciplines within healthcare law
- Assist with enterprise risk management and governance initiatives
- Support healthcare compliance and regulatory matters
- Advise on research administration, clinical research, grants, and sponsored research compliance
- Handle research and clinical trial contracting
- Counsel on employment, benefits, and labor-related issues
- Conduct or support internal investigations related to compliance, workplace, regulatory, or operational concerns
- Collaborate with compliance, operational, human resources, risk management, research, and executive leadership teams
- Draft, review, negotiate, and advise on contracts, policies, investigations, compliance initiatives, and regulatory matters
Requirements
- Minimum 6 years of experience as an attorney within a hospital, health system, academic medical center, healthcare provider, or similarly regulated healthcare organization
- Significant experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Enterprise Risk Management
- Healthcare Compliance
- Research and Research Compliance
- Research and Clinical Trial Contracting
- Employment and Benefits Counseling
- Internal Investigations
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to support legal matters beyond primary expertise
- Experience partnering with compliance, operational, HR, risk management, research, or executive leadership teams
- Ability to identify legal and operational risks and provide practical, business-oriented advice
- Experience with healthcare regulatory matters strongly preferred
- Strong academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school
- Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Excellent analytical, written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Outstanding professional references
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with enterprise risk management programs and governance initiatives
- Background in research administration, clinical research, grants, sponsored research, or research compliance
- Expertise in healthcare regulatory compliance and investigations
- Experience in employment counseling, employee relations, labor and employment compliance, and employee benefits
- Experience conducting internal investigations involving compliance, workplace, regulatory, or operational concerns
- Familiarity with healthcare contracts and transactional support
- Prior experience in academic medical center or health system legal departments
Position Details
- Role type: Interim In-House Counsel engagement with potential for hire
- Schedule: Full-time
- Location: Fully remote acceptable during interim engagement; candidates must be able to work a hybrid schedule with 3 days on-site in Chicago, IL for consideration of conversion to direct hire
- Duration: 3-6 months, with potential for conversion to permanent role
Compensation & Benefits
- Annualized pay range: $80,000 to $180,000 or more (full-time equivalent), based on experience, qualifications, location, and other factors
- Contract professionals are typically W2 employees eligible for full benefits when working 20+ hours per week
- Benefits include Group Life, Long-Term Disability (LTD), Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D), qualified 401(k) plan, CLE and professional expense stipends
