Overview

This position provides daily supervision and support to patent and trademark paralegals firmwide to help ensure timely, high-quality work product and strong client service.

The organization is seeking an IP Paralegal Manager to join the team in the following offices: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, or Washington D.C.

This role offers flexibility to be fully remote while working within reasonable commuting distance from any of the listed offices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of IP paralegals.
  • Manage and rebalance paralegal caseloads based on skill, capacity, and urgency to support quality work and high utilization of timekeepers.
  • Promote continuing education and skills advancement; provide opportunities for training.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical, procedural, and firm standards.
  • Monitor and ensure patent and trademark paralegal work product is timely, accurate, and meets the needs of attorneys and clients.
  • Efficiently manage complex and challenging workflows and cross-office coverage; track overtime usage to support budget management.
  • Provide proactive problem solving to drive positive change.
  • Handle day-to-day supervision, including managing time and attendance, payroll approvals, and expense reimbursements.
  • Conduct semi-annual check-ins with goal-setting.
  • Provide employee relations support in collaboration with IP leadership and Human Resources.
  • Manage recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of patent and trademark paralegals.
  • Work with the Associate Director of IP Operations on projects and initiatives.

Requirements

  • 8+ years’ experience in a law firm or in-house legal department environment is required.
  • Experience leading in a supervisory/management role supervising staff is required.
  • Subject matter expertise in rules and procedures in multiple areas of intellectual property (e.g., patent, trademark, and copyright) is required.
  • Ability to supervise a team of 20+ paralegals, creating a positive working environment and leading by example.
  • General management and leadership skills, including effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interact effectively with persons at all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding customer service skills, professional demeanor, discretion, and flexibility.
  • Ability to set high standards for self and direct reports.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations calmly and professionally; anticipate potential conflicts and reach satisfactory resolution.
  • High sensitivity for confidential matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to use MS Office products, specifically Excel and Word, required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • Paralegal certification.

Compensation & Benefits

Washington

  • Annualized salary range: $157,000 to $178,000
  • Actual pay will be adjusted based on education, training, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

  • Initial vacation benefit is 15 days per year and sick leave is 11 days per year, accrued bi-weekly.

California

  • Los Angeles annualized salary range: $160,000 to $179,000
  • San Francisco annualized salary range: $179,000 to $204,000

  • Annualized salary range (New York City): $169,000 to $193,000
  • Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.

District of Columbia

  • Annualized salary range: $161,000 to $177,000
  • Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
