Overview

The organization’s Center for Public Health Law Research (CPHLR), housed at its Beasley School of Law, is seeking applications for a Law and Policy Analyst.

This role supports the widespread adoption of scientific tools and methods for mapping and evaluating the impact of law on health. The Law and Policy Analyst will contribute primarily to scientific legal mapping projects by researching and analyzing statutory and regulatory laws and policies across emerging public health topics.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct federal, state, and local law and policy research, including statutes, regulations, and case law
  • Conduct international and comparative law and policy research
  • Conduct historical legal and policy research
  • Research and synthesize complex legal issues across a wide variety of public health law topics
  • Draft background memorandums summarizing the legal and policy landscape

Legal dataset creation and legal mapping

  • Work collaboratively across multiple projects and competing deadlines
  • Collaborate with external clients and users on dataset creation
  • Participate in all phases of legal mapping dataset creation, including:
    • scope conceptualization and refinement
    • coding the law
    • quality control
    • publication and dissemination
  • Use MonQcle software to build and code legal datasets
  • Participate in legal coding review processes
  • Draft publication materials such as research protocols and policy briefs to accompany datasets
  • Work with intern cohorts

Research dissemination, scholarship, and grant writing

  • Contribute to writing grants
  • Draft white papers, issue briefs, blog posts, and other scholarly publications
  • Analyze and summarize research findings for dissemination
  • Submit conference abstracts and attend professional conferences
  • Conduct trainings and presentations on the organization’s work
  • Review social science and public health research

Other duties

  • Coordinate with partially and fully remote staff
  • Participate in project team and staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • JD degree
  • At least two (2) years of relevant post-graduate research experience
  • Relevant experience may include:
    • legal epidemiology research
    • legal or policy research
    • analysis of statutes and regulations
    • development of legal or policy research products (e.g., policy briefs, manuscripts, legal datasets)
    • work on interdisciplinary research projects focused on law and public health
  • Experience using legal research databases including Lexis, Westlaw, and HeinOnline
  • Experience with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, OneDrive Dropbox and web interfaces
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred Education and Experience

  • At least One (1) year of public health law experience
  • Grant writing experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $60,000 - $69,242
  • HR considers factors including job duties, the applicant’s education and experience, internal equity, department budget, and funding source.
