Overview
This role is a virtual law clerk position with the Southern California Staff Counsel team. The preferred candidate is a third-year law student, with some experience drafting motions, and available approximately 20 hours/week during the semester.
The clerk will work part time, generally about 20 hours per week.
Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research on laws, court decisions, documents, opinions, briefs, and other case-related information.
- Analyze legal issues and apply legal principles to identify applicable defenses, relevant arguments, and litigation strategy.
- Prepare briefs, legal memoranda, and statements of issues involved in cases, including suggestions or recommendations.
- Review complaints, petitions, or motions filed to determine issues involved.
- Prepare responsive pleadings and correspondence as appropriate.
- Assist trial attorneys by preparing trial/mediation/arbitration documents and binders.
- Attend court sessions, depositions, mediations, and trials to hear oral arguments and document necessary case information.
Requirements
- Bachelors Degree required.
- Second or third year law student with an interest in civil litigation, personal injury, or insurance defense.
- Preferred: third year of law school.
- Preferred: some experience drafting motions.
- Availability: approximately 20 hours/week during the semester.
Physical Actions
- Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift.
- Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping.
- Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0–10 pounds without assistance.
- Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (e.g., others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Visually verifies and reads information.
- Visually locates material, resources, and other objects.
- Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift.
- Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.
Physical Environment
- Open office working environment with normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions.
Compensation & Benefits
