Overview

A growing technology company is seeking a highly motivated, business-minded attorney to join as Lead Counsel, HR Products on the Legal & Compliance team. This role involves partnering closely with Product, Sales, and Compliance teams and reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, HR Products. The primary focus is to provide key legal guidance for launching Employer of Record (EOR) services in new countries and ongoing product and employment counseling across launched EOR countries. The role also includes serving as product counsel for HR product teams including Professional Employer Organization (PEO), Time, and Payroll.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deploy AI-powered tools to automate legal workflows, scale the legal team's output, and enable self-service resources for cross-functional partners.
  • Provide employment counsel to EOR HR and PEO Advisor teams.
  • Provide product counseling to Time and Payroll teams, focusing on wage and hour compliance.
  • Analyze and advise on employment rules and regulations for compliant hiring and offboarding through EOR in various jurisdictions.
  • Prepare employment agreement templates, termination notice and agreement templates, and policy documents for EOR.
  • Collaborate with Product, Operations, Business Development, Sales, and Client Services teams to build and manage the product counseling function.
  • Navigate complex regulatory frameworks in the U.S. and internationally to create scalable and innovative product solutions.
  • Promote a culture of compliance and integrity across operations as the company grows.
  • Provide general legal advice and assistance as needed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in-house or at a law firm.
  • Substantive knowledge and experience with employment law.
  • Law degree (JD or equivalent).
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a solution-oriented approach.
  • Passion for efficient processes.
  • Comfort experimenting with and building on AI tools.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent drafting, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex legal concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Sense of humor.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary plus benefits and equity.
  • Salary range for U.S.-based employees: $177,000 - $295,000 per year.
  • Salary range for Canada-based employees: CAD 135,000 - 225,000 per year.
  • Final compensation depends on professional background, experience, and location.

Location & Work Environment

  • The role is based in San Francisco, CA.
  • The employer values in-office collaboration and expects office-based employees (within a defined radius) to work onsite at least three days per week under current policy.
