Overview

This role provides legal counsel and guidance on U.S. government contracts, acquisitions, and related matters for the Maritime Division. The position supports the full lifecycle of government contracts, partnering closely with business development, proposal, engineering, outside counsel, and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of a small, dynamic legal team.
  • Support customer growth by executing new government contracts and growing existing ones, including helping develop strategy for new business opportunities.
  • Assist Business Development, Proposal, and Engineering teams in using federal procurement law to efficiently capture new contracts, grow existing contracts, and identify follow-on opportunities.
  • Manage and develop high-trust relationships with procurement office representatives at Government agencies.
  • Provide legal counsel and day-to-day management across the acquisitions lifecycle, including:
    • Overseeing and evaluating major proposals
    • Monitoring large contracts
    • Leading or assisting in key negotiations
    • Resolving performance issues
    • Identifying risks and proposing mitigations
    • Ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies
  • Handle a broad range of legal matters, including negotiating license and services agreements, bid protests and litigation, intellectual property, compliance, and employment matters.
  • Represent the legal team in relationships with outside counsel, vendors, engineers, executives, customers, and regulators.
  • Develop software contracting approaches for delivering software to the Department of Defense and negotiate those agreements with contracting officers and program counsel.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of work on U.S. government contracts matters, preferably with a law firm or the government (more senior lawyers are also encouraged to apply; the position may be adjusted based on experience).
  • Understanding of the government procurement process, particularly contract vehicles, software acquisition approaches, and data rights.
  • Judgment and initiative to make risk-adjusted decisions and own multiple projects end-to-end, including guiding deal lifecycles or addressing unexpected legal issues in defense or start-up environments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and contribute across a broad set of legal topics as needed (e.g., IP, litigation, financing, securities, compliance, and employment law).
  • Licensed to practice law in CA or D.C.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pre-law school professional experience (e.g., military or government).
  • Combination of law-firm and in-house or government experience.
  • Experience working with the government.
  • Experience with engineering, software, or other technology.
  • Interest in the law and policy of defense acquisitions, including an opinion-driven, constructive approach to improving the field.
  • Ability and determination to operate independently in a rapidly evolving company.
  • Currently possesses and is able to maintain an active U.S. Top Secret security clearance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • US Salary Range: $191,000—$253,000 USD
  • The salary range is an estimate based on a range of compensation factors and includes base salary only. Actual salary offer may vary based on work experience, education/training, critical skills, and/or business considerations.
