Overview
A leading provider of open source software and operating systems is seeking a Legal Advisor or Legal Counsel to join their expanding in-house legal team. The organization supports a widely used platform in enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. This role offers the opportunity to work on compliance and privacy matters within the technology and enterprise software sectors, addressing complex questions related to technology, law, and product development.
Location: Home-based in EMEA or the Americas, with an option to work from the London office.
Responsibilities
- Draft and review corporate policies, lead process changes, and implement controls to meet global compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Develop, maintain, and scale global privacy programs, including conducting Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), Records of Processing Activities (ROPAs), and supporting operational initiatives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate the impact of privacy, data protection laws, and regulations, including AI regulations.
- Provide legal support to various internal clients, including product teams.
- Work with local counsel in multiple countries to obtain and implement legal advice.
Requirements
- Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university.
- Law degree, JD, or equivalent, with an active license to practice law or current progress towards licensure.
- Strong drive and a history of exceeding expectations.
- Professional proficiency in written and spoken English, with excellent drafting and presentation skills.
- Confidence to respectfully communicate, exchange feedback, and share ideas.
- Appreciation for diversity and ability to work effectively in a multicultural, multinational environment.
- Strong organizational skills, proactive approach, and efficiency.
- Demonstrated good commercial judgment.
- Ability to travel twice a year for company events lasting up to two weeks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in compliance, data privacy, or product development.
- Leadership skills and ability to influence others to adopt new ideas or practices.
- Understanding of the open source software community and its values.
- Familiarity with the technology industry, including silicon, data centers, PCs, connected devices, and software.
- Experience working in an in-house legal team and/or law firm.
