Remote · Australia Contract
Est. $120K – $165K/yr

Overview

A high-growth technology business is seeking an immediately available legal contractor to provide interim support to its payments and regulatory function for a 3–4-month engagement. This role operates within a fast-paced, product-driven environment and involves close collaboration with senior leaders across payments, risk, and compliance to maintain momentum during permanent hiring. The engagement offers full flexibility regarding location, weekly hours, and seniority level, provided the contractor can work autonomously and deliver pragmatic, commercially grounded regulatory advice. This opportunity is suited for a payments-focused legal professional comfortable managing varied workstreams across product development, regulatory interpretation, and cross-functional stakeholder engagement in agile, tech-enabled settings.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and expansion of payments products across the Australian, US, and UK markets.
  • Provide guidance to Product and Engineering teams on Australian Financial Services License (AFSL), Anti-Money Laundering (AML), and broader risk-management obligations.
  • Deliver legal insight and risk-mitigation support for high-priority strategic initiatives and incident response matters.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with regulators and technical subject-matter experts.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Privacy teams to embed financial-crime considerations into product design.
  • Support day-to-day legal operations to ensure continuity and momentum across the payments legal workstream.

Requirements

  • Practical experience in payments and financial services, ideally gained in tech-enabled or product-driven environments rather than large traditional financial institutions.
  • Strong working knowledge of licensing, anti-money laundering requirements, and broader regulatory risk frameworks relevant to payments operations.
  • Ability to communicate complex regulatory concepts clearly and work effectively in fast-moving, cross-functional settings with minimal oversight.
  • Confidence in managing multiple priorities and flexibility to engage either full-time for a shorter period or part-time across the full 3–4-month term.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Highly competitive compensation and benefits package within the alternative legal services marketplace.
  • Health benefits, pension, and additional perks.
  • Access to professional development resources and learning programs.
  • Predominantly remote work, with occasional on-site presence required by some clients.

Location

Flexible location; remote work is supported with some client requirements for on-site presence.

Additional Information

  • The engagement is open to candidates who can operate autonomously and deliver commercially grounded regulatory advice.
  • Equal employment opportunity is provided without discrimination based on race, color, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, political opinion, sex, gender reassignment, pregnancy, age, disability, citizenship status, marital status, genetic predisposition, sexual orientation, military service, or any other protected characteristic.
  • Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities upon request during the recruitment process.
  • Employment may be contingent upon successful background checks, proof of identity, and legal authorization to work.

Applicants are encouraged to apply if they meet the requirements and are interested in a flexible, impactful legal contractor role within a dynamic payments and regulatory environment.
