Overview

The organization is seeking a Staff Counsel Attorney to join its legal team. This role is for an attorney who is licensed and residing in Texas. The position focuses on defending insureds and managing professional liability and related civil litigation matters.

This role may be performed remotely, in-office, or hybrid, and includes travel and personal appearance as required for hearings, conferences, mediations, arbitrations, depositions, site inspections, client meetings, and/or trial.

Responsibilities

  • Handle a caseload defending the organization’s insureds in pre-litigation and litigated disputes, including:
    • General liability
    • Real estate/title matters
    • HOA litigation
    • D&O matters
    • Miscellaneous professional liability
  • Respond to demand letters, state and federal agency charges, subpoenas, and lawsuits filed against insureds.
  • Independently manage assigned cases from inception through conclusion, including dismissal, settlement, or trial.
  • Conduct depositions, pre-trial discovery, mediations, arbitrations, trials, and other legal activities required to resolve cases.
  • Communicate frequently with claim professionals and clients regarding legal file status and evaluations.
  • Provide legal advice to insureds and claim professionals.
  • Negotiate settlements as directed.
  • Attend round tables.
  • Work independently with minimal direction, documenting communications and handling matters efficiently.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts in Texas.
  • 10+ years’ experience in civil litigation, with defense experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of current procedural and substantive law, as well as federal, state, and administrative agency rules.
  • Ability to analyze issues, proactively develop effective strategies for pending cases, communicate regularly with claims professionals, document communications, and resolve cases efficiently and effectively.
  • Solid experience preparing responsive pleadings, handling appearances, motion practice, and valuing claims, settlements, and trials.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary for court hearings, depositions, site inspections, client meetings, and other in-person events.
  • Trial experience desired.

  • Compensation: The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus (which could take the form of a general bonus, sales incentive, or short-term incentive), long-term incentive, or spot recognition awards. The posted range reflects the organization’s ability to hire at different position titles and levels depending on background and experience.
