Overview
The organization is seeking a Staff Counsel attorney licensed and residing in Texas to join its legal team. This role primarily supports the defense of claims in professional liability and related litigation matters, with responsibility for managing assigned cases from initial response through resolution.
Flexible work arrangements are available. This role can be performed remotely, in-office, or hybrid.
Responsibilities
- Handle a caseload defending the organization’s insureds in pre-litigation and litigated disputes, including:
- General liability
- Real estate/title issues
- HOA litigation
- D&O matters
- Miscellaneous professional liability
- Respond to demand letters, state and federal agency charges, subpoenas, and lawsuits filed against insureds.
- Independently conduct legal proceedings as needed, including depositions, pre-trial discovery, mediations, arbitrations, trials, and other activities required to resolve cases.
- Investigate and manage assigned cases from inception through conclusion (including dismissal, settlement, or trial).
- Communicate frequently with claim professionals and clients regarding the status of and evaluations for legal files.
- Provide legal advice to insureds and claim professionals.
- Negotiate settlements as directed.
- Attend round tables.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts in Texas.
- 10+ years’ experience in civil litigation; defense experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of current procedural and substantive law, as well as federal, state, and administrative agency rules.
- Demonstrated ability to:
- Analyze issues
- Proactively develop effective strategies for pending cases
- Communicate regularly with claims professionals
- Document communications
- Resolve cases efficiently and effectively
- Solid experience preparing responsive pleadings, handling appearances, motion practice, and valuing claims, settlements, and trials.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction and efficiently manage matters.
- Willingness to travel and make in-person appearances as required for court hearings, depositions, site inspections, client meetings, and other in-person events.

Compensation:
- The target hiring range for this role may vary based on geographic location and other factors, including merit or performance, demonstrated proficiency, skills for the role, education, travel requirements, and experience.
