Overview

A legal team is seeking a Trial Attorney or Senior Trial Attorney for their California office. This role involves managing civil State Court litigation cases with moderate to high exposure, primarily in commercial auto negligence and commercial general liability. Flexible work arrangements are available, including in-office, hybrid, or remote options.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of moderate to complex commercial auto negligence and commercial general liability claims and coverage matters.
  • Collaborate with claims professionals to resolve cases cost-effectively.
  • Develop legal theories and affirmative defenses in response to lawsuits.
  • Conduct routine motion practice, discovery, and legal research.
  • Handle trials and arbitrations.
  • Present updates on legal developments to claims partners periodically.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of litigation experience; trial experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable motor vehicle record.
  • Admission to the bar and licensure to practice law in assigned jurisdictions.
  • Strong advocacy skills to assist, defend, or plead for clients.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to translate legal concepts into layman's terms.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize work and maximize productivity.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency with Outlook, MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, litigation management systems, email, and calendar management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, adjusters, claims professionals, and support staff.
  • Investigative skills to carefully follow up on inquiries and gather evidence.
  • Legal research skills to locate and interpret relevant laws and render accurate opinions.
  • Courtroom skills, including appropriate behavior, attire, and familiarity with court rules and procedures.
  • Commitment to providing high professional service to clients and claims professionals.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to use a personal computer and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to travel for in-person court appearances and trials as needed.
  • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
